Distracted Boyfriend

The other day I discovered photons created from nuclear fusion take tens of thousands of years to escape to the surface of the sun. Apparently these particles can only travel a few millimeters on average before they hit something and change their direction. Once free, it only takes them a few minutes to reach Earth before hitting a random dust particle on the windshield of my car and obstructing my view of bicycles, cars, and trains who, to various degrees, are all trying to prevent me from getting to work safely.

In my own unique tribute to this fact, I’m going to elaborate on some thoughts that have been bouncing around in my head for a surprisingly long time but have never made it into any previous Christmas letters.

Whenever I see the “Distracted Boyfriend” photograph (based on a 2015 stock photograph by Spanish photographer Antonio Guillem and made famous around 2017 thanks to 100 million Internet memes) I always think how both women look incredibly similar with the only significant difference is the woman in the background is dressed more casually. I envision the boyfriend having a thought bubble to a copy of the first image except the women are switched and he is dressed up in slacks and a sports jacket. Now the alternate version of the boyfriend is having a thought bubble back to the original picture. Finally, and I do understand that I’m risking a complete thought bubble overload here, there is a completely new third image that all four of the women are thought bubbling into where both women are sitting together at a high end restaurant having a great time together and the boyfriend is their obviously disgruntled waiter.

A few years ago I received a bill for using the E470 toll road on the east side of Denver. While “weaseling my way out of things” has never been a strong point for me, I was proud of the message I sent back to the toll collection authority:

I received a bill for $3.75 for a toll that I believe is incorrect. I live in Loveland and do not use the toll highways. Also, I was at work.

I know it is only a few dollars, but I hope to get this resolved as my wife is starting to think I have a secret family in Aurora. This, of course, is complicated by the fact that my actual secret family lives in Wellington.
